My grandmother said to me, as she was about to throw away these pictures, "No one cares about these. No one will want to look at them." I intervened by painting into them in order to create something fresh and new, and to commemorate her experiences in a unique way.

The photographs are from the trips that she took with my grandfather after they both retired—they were often passengers aboard freight ships which criss-crossed the ocean. She stopped going when my grandfather died.
